Are matrices the same thing as cramer's rule?

Well, if you are not taking engineering courses or mathematics, you don't need to learn higher degree of mathematics but at least as a person, you need to learn even basic algebra, trigonometry and geometry. Now with regards to the calculator, it's true that it can do/solve everything. But again, you need to know simple basic principles behind that. GOT IT?!
