Why is the Grateful Dead so popular?

There's magic in the lyrics and although I agree that their vocals are not that good, their creativeness and lyrical content are un-matched, there is not a band more unique than the Grateful Dead and while you may find music that doesn't have a "pop sound" boring, to the rest of us that are musicians or can recognize stunning music when we see it, it's moving.
