Is getting a hamster ok if i have a puppy?

i had a hamster once, and loved her to bits. After she had died :( we got a puppy :) but i rli want another hamster. i would put the cage in my room upstars, but i am still mortified that it will escape and the puppy, who will soon be a dog may eat it! is this a bad idea? i dont know if this will make a difference, but just to let u no the puppy is a chocolate lab, will they get on with hamsters? PLZ HELP! i was thinking to get a gl cage so the hamster cdnt climb up it as easily to escape, but it could get bored. wat do u think about a puppy and a hamster?
