My mechanic says that Escort engines are all interference types and 50% are damaged. Really?

any engine that jumps timing can bend valves if the owner/mechanic keeps spinning the engine over, I've seen it on a lot of engines, the 2.0L split port, never seen one yet, though the ones with twin camshafts, most don't bend the valves but I've seen at least two
